EISCAT_3D signals from space

Last July we collected data with the First Stage Receive Unit/Antenna Unit while an experiment was running on the EISCAT Tromsø VHF radar. The idea was to see if we could detect the VHF signal scattered from something in space, and we did!

Returns from several satellites were teased out of the data stream, with the strongest return shown in this plot. The satellite appears to be from a launch in 1977 and the signals are from roughly 1000 km altitude (it was a big satellite!). While much work remains to be done, it is exciting to see things coming together!
