Space research pioneer Bengt Hultqvist is turning 90 years old

The "Hjalmar Lundbohm" of space Professor Emeritus Bengt Hultqvist, turning 90 years old on August 21, has sometimes been called "the Hjalmar Lundbohm* of space" - it is largely thanks to him that space operations in Kiruna have gained such an outstanding development. Bengt Hultqvist was the initiator of EISCAT, the European scientific radar facilities in northern Norway, Sweden and Finland and in Svalbard, which are the most advanced radar facilities of their kind. EISCAT Headquarters in Kiruna, is the only international research center based in Sweden. "Without Bengt, Swedish space research should not have been where it is today," says IRF's current director Stas Barabash. "He was the one who laid the foundation for  Swedish space research and he is the reason Sweden now operates what is probably the most advanced space program in comparison with other smaller countries."
